Buying a portable serger used to be my obsession until it became a must-have while we’re stuck with indoor life. I’ve been looking into sergers as an investment into my hobby and as a part of embracing the “new normal”. Sewing has been always my favorite thing to do during my free time.

I know a lot of you are confused between sergers/overlockers/edgers and sewing machines. To make things clear, there are things that an overlocker can do that a sewing machine can’t and vice-versa. They both sew but they also serve their own purpose in the sewing world.
Choosing my sewing equipment was never easy. There were a lot of things to consider before I decided to buy my portable SINGER Heavy Duty Overlocker/Serger. You can read more on the things to consider before you purchase your sewing equipment here.
Why Do You Need a Serger?

1. Makes your work look PROFESSIONAL & CLEAN
The main purpose of having a serger aside from clean edges is for you to make sure that your work is ready to sell with a professional look inside and out.
2. Saves you a lot of TIME
Instead of finding other ways to clean up those edges like finishing your seams with bias tape or doing a french seam, using an over locker will save you a lot of time and effort.
3. Gets rid of your “FRAYING” problems
No one is a fan of threads falling off everywhere. Having an edger simply solves all your FRAYING problems.
4. Can SEW and CUT at the same time
Unlike using a zigzag or overlocking stitch on your portable machine, the serger can remove your excess sewing allowance and secure the edges of your fabric all at once.
5. It’s just SATISFYING to use it
For a person like me who likes to finish their work to perfection, finishing those edges neatly is so satisfying!

Those are the main reasons why I chose to buy a serger for my projects. I hope I helped you decide to get your own overlocker! Let me know if you have other suggestions. Just leave a comment or talk to me at hello@andiolarte.com. You can also read more on my blog here.
